The Introduction of  Hefei Institutes of Physical Science,

Chinese Academy of Sciences  (CASHIPS)

History: Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CASHIPS, Formerly the Hefei Branch of CAS founded in 1978, is composed of 5 institutes, the Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP), the Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP)Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), and Hefei Institute of Intelligent Machines (IIM), High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HMFL) and a Academy-Local cooperation Center named "Anhui Academy of Recycling Economical and Technical Engineering ". It is located on the beautiful peninsula near Shushan Lake, west suburb of Hefei city, Anhui, China.

Staff Members: Among 1500 employees, there are 1000 scientists, engineers and technicians with 111 research professors, 270 associate research professors. 2 winners of National Outstanding Youth Foundation Program. Besides, there are also 680 graduate studentspost-doctor and visiting scholars gathered in this academic area. Some of them come from Hongkong, MacaoTaiwan  or  abroad.

Lab. & Research Fields: There are 20 well equipped laboratories. Including 8 key labs such as: Atmosphere Optics Lab, one of the major laboratories of national high tech projects; two CAS major laboratories named “the internal friction & defects in solids lab ”and “Ion-beam Bioengineering lab.”; Laboratory of Optical Radiometric Calibration and Characterization, Chinese Academy of Sciences; The Key Laboratory of Environmental Optics and Monitoring Technique of Anhui Province and a Nano-Technical Engineering Center of Anhui etc. We have also built  the first super-conducting machine HT-7 tokamak in China and as a Nuclear Fusion Research Center sponsored by the World Laboratory, and a Research Center of the Third World Academy of Science. The major research fields of CASHIPS aim at the following eight directions: Plasma physics and Magnetic confinement fusion; Atmosphere optics; Nano-science & material physics; Environmental optics & monitoring; High magnet field science & technology; Ion-beam Bioengineering; Laser application technology; Cryogenic&super conduct magnet  technology etc.

Major Research Program:  Now is undertaking  69 projects in the National Ninth Five-Year Key Scientific Project, 973 and 863program etc. Including“ HT-7U Super-conducting Tokamak experiment instrument construction”; “ Ion-beam biology technology application research”; “Investigation of Advanced Quasi-steady-state operation with high performance plasma on HT-7";“ Nano-material&stucture ”; “ low-cost, long-life dye-solar cells ”;“ The Research of the Key Technology of Air Quality Monitoring System using in City”; “The research on tunable infrared laser differential absorption spectrometer technique and system for monitoring emission from on-road motor vehicles” etc.

Outstanding Achievements: Since 2002, Our scientific achievements have won 161 various  prizes  authorized by national or provincial government. Especially, the study result on HT-7 Super-conducting Tokamak obtained by the Institute of Plasma Physics get significant success and won the first class prize of scientific progress of CAS. It become one of the two important devices to process high parameters steady state plasma experiment in the world. “Study and Development on High-Quality Tunable Laser Crystal Ti-doped Sapphire” won the second class prize of national scientific progress etc.

Academic Periodicals: "Plasma Science & Technology"(English version ),"Chinese Journal of Quantum Electronics","Optoelectronic Technology & Information".

Exchanges and Collaborations: Long-term mutual collaboration programs have been established with foreign institutions over 20 countries. A close relationship with Chiba UniversityJapan University of Herdelberg, Germany and  Keele University of U.K. has been set to perform the studies in the area of laser spectrum, environmental optics and monitoring technology. A JSPS-CAS Core-University Program on plasma physics is going well with National Institutes and universities of Japan. The cooperation agreement has been conducted on plasma physics experiments, nuclear fusion technology with General Atomics of USA. CASHIPS works widely and closely with domestic research institutesuniversities and enterprises inside and outside Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on scientific research, applied research and development work. Twenty more  R & D centers or companies were initialized.
